Telecom on zeroth order PC-EVN demonstration
Monday May 22 2006

present: OSO: Conway, Lindqvist, Hammergreen
         JIVE: Szomoru, Pogrebenko, van Langevelde(chair)
         MRO: Mujunen, Ritakari
JBO: Anderson, Strong, Burgess, Garrington, Hughes-Jones

A baseline testbed was discussed that employs the PC-EVN at Onsala and
Jodrell Bank, which can be used to verify fringes and later to test
protocols. There is previous experience and hardware at Jodrell but not
at Onsala. Mujunen will supply details for a PC to be bought at
Onsala. Metsahovi will provide the "Milking machine" board (on
loan). It is important to upgrade all machines to the same version
operating system and Mujunen will study the possibility to distribute
the system on disk or DVD.

Conway accepted the responsibility to arrange a date for testing this
after the middle of August. The consensus was to schedule one date
without and one with telescope time.

The zero test will use Mk4 data format, buffer on PC-EVN at the
telescope, use standard ftp (TCP/IP), buffer on normal PC's at JIVE and
transfer data for correlation to Mk5. At JIVE there is no scheduled
manpower or resources for new hardware, however no serious showstoppers
were identified. Van Langevelde has the responsibility to organize the
test at JIVE.

A first "challenging" test could use direct transfer from PC-EVN using
a Tsunami protocol. Next thing to try would be to incorporate the
Jodrell UDP protocol on the PC-EVN platform. Such tests can be done
without real data and between Onsala and Jodrell. Attempts are being
made to get the Swedish NREN interested in this.
